Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz. It is usually smoother and slightly faster than ballet, but not as fast as jazz. The lyrical dancer is very expressive in her/his movement demonstrating many ranges of emotions such as love, joy, and anger. The movement in lyrical dance is usually seamless, fluid, graceful, and occasionally emphasizes a finishing step or gesture to add more drama and meaning to the dance.
At the Sharon Davis School of Dance studios in Tallahassee, we offer lyrical classes for elementary through college-aged students. Faculty members incorporate their strong ballet backgrounds in center and traveling dance combinations, as well as integrate stretching and body conditioning in warm-ups.
